Sexuality Counselor, Educator, and Consultant
Thanks for stopping by! I look forward to helping you meet your goals through transformative sexuality counseling, education, and consulting, whether you need my services for yourself or for an organization.
My work in sexuality education began in 1984, when I became a Planned Parenthood patient educator. In 1999, I was trained to facilitate the Our Whole Lives Lifespan Sexuality Education program for middle schoolers, and their parents’ questions led me to create workshops and write a manual called Sexuality Talking Points. Positive response to my programs and parent manual led me to enter Widener University’s Graduate Program in Human Sexuality Education.
My plan was to leverage my BA in Mass Communications and 25 years as a copywriter and journalist to create sexuality education resources for healthcare professionals through my LLC, Honest Exchange. I proceeded to earn master’s and doctoral degrees, but a funny thing happened along the way to creating a publishing company: I fell in love with teaching and training. I became an adjunct professor at Marymount Manhattan College, which led to teaching gigs at Widener University, Drexel University, Moravian Theological Seminary, and Moravian College. I also guest lectured at Harvard Divinity School, Boston University, the University of Indiana, Mount Sinai and Robert Wood Johnson medical schools, and other academic institutions.
I earned certification as a sexuality counselor and educator through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) to prepare me to consult privately with individuals and couples at the New Jersey Center for Sexual Wellness, which I co-founded in 2009.
I am an AASECT-certified supervisor for individuals seeking to become certified sexuality educators. And, I am the 2022 AASECT Sexuality Educator of the Year!
I provide professional development and presentations for physicians, nurses, medical students, long-term care professionals, educators, and clergy. I do a significant amount of training through my position as the Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education Program Manager for the Unitarian Universalist Association, as well.
I am the co-president and founding member of the Sexuality and Aging Consortium at Widener University, and I founded SaferSex4Seniors.org, an educational site for sexually active and/or interested adults in mid- and older age. That site content is now housed on this website on the Sexuality and Aging page.
In every area of my work, I approach sexuality as a positive part of life that should be treated with respect, care, integrity, celebration, and humor throughout the lifespan. I am committed to providing services and resources that are anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and inclusive
“How can I help you?”— Melanie
